The tar-snapshot-edit
utility changes device numbers
stored in GNU tar incremental
snapshot files. This helps avoid full redump of the file systems
after certain system hardware or software upgrades, that change device numbers,
without actually changing files. In particular, there are reports
that this is necessary when upgrading to a newer version of Linux 2.6.x
kernel.
The utility is available for download from GNU tar
repository.
Make sure you have Perl installed. Download
tar-snapshot-edit, copy it to an appropriate
location in your PATH
and make sure it has executable bit set.
If the full file name of the perl interpreter is not /usr/bin/perl
,
open tar-snapshot-edit
with a text editor of your choice and
change the very first line, so that it contains the actual path to the
interpreter.
Refer to tar documentation for the detailed discussion of the utility and its usage.
