Social Activities at GHM 2014

The weather in Munich during GHM 2014 looks as if it will be “changeable”. Therefore, after the days' formal activities are over, we have two alternative arrangements planned, dependent on the weather. Perhaps we will do both:

We hope that both alternatives will give you a chance to relax and meet with fellow hackers. There will however, not only be drinking and eating. Some extra-curricular activities have been “organised”:

Name those GNUs

With only one exception, there has been overwhelmingly enthausiastic reponse to the logo used to promote this year's meeting. This image emblazons the T-Shirts for the meeting and flyers which you may have seen. It depicts two anthropomorphic gnus wearing traditional Bavarian dress. One is drinking a maß of refreshing liquid. The other is holding a pretzel.

A number of people have asked the names of these two friendly characters. Sadly, the artist forgot to name them. This horrendeous oversight will be corrected.

There will be a prize for the most original, witty and fitting names for them. Note that although they are in “tracht”, these gnus are not native to Bavaria (they have travelled from Africa to visit GHM), so obviously Germanic names like Ludwig or Mechthild would not be suitable.

Send suggestions to ghm@gnu.org with the subject line GNAMES

Be those GNUs

During your stay in Munich, you may well see men and women dressed similarly to our gnu friends (but without the horns).

There will be a prize awarded to the person attending the beer garden who most convincingly imitates the dress of either of the creatures. You may need some props to achieve this effect. Beer and pretzels are plenty in the biergarten. For apparel you might like to visit a local emporium which specialises in such vestments. The store is a short distance away. (They will be closed on Friday because it it a public holiday in Bavaria).

We want a style which appropriately emphasises the link between mankind and gnu (hint: both are mammals).

For both competions, the judges decision is final. No correspondence will be entered into. May contain traces of bre ...er... nuts.
